Taylor Fritz Fascinates, Serena Bows Out at Wimbledon 2026
Wimbledon
July 1, 2026
Taylor Fritz was painfully aware that he just had to win after walking out like a catwalk model at Wimbledon 2026.
The dashing American wore an all-white Boss blazer and trousers over his usual tennis attire as he strolled out for action.
But the man with the film-star looks did seem a little self-conscious, emerging into the All England Club sunshine somewhat over-dressed.
Taylor Fritz is a fascinating and charismatic presence already at Wimbledon 2026. And he could go deep yet again.
But Fritz admitted thinking about the worst-case scenario before his first-round match against Dusan Lajovic began.
He explained later: ‘You show up in a full outfit and get snipped in the first round, you kind of look stupid. You look really stupid, honestly.’
Luckily everything broadly went according to plan. Fritz defeated the Serb 6-3, 6-4, 6-3, despite facing some tricky break points at times.
He had been scheduled to play Britain’s Jack Draper, who very sadly had to pull out with a last-gasp recurrence of his arm injury.
But anything can happen at Wimbledon. Just ask Ben Shelton, one of the Americans who had been tipped for potential glory at Wimbledon 2026.
Shelton went out in the very first round against the unknown Finn, Otto Virtanen in a five-set thriller. ‘Tough loss,’ Ben said mournfully. ‘One of the toughest I’ve taken, for sure.’
Serena Williams also waved goodbye to Wimbledon as a singles player after a thoroughly entertaining three sets against Australia’s against Maya Joint.
But Serena’s second-set tie-break win is sure to go down as one of the great moments at the Championships this year.
Unfortunately time finally caught up with the multiple champion as Joint held her nerve to triumph 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3. At least Serena will be back with sister Venus in the doubles today!
Taylor Fritz has plenty of compatriots still in the singles fight at Wimbledon 2026, though. Coco Gauff, for example, plays Solana Sierra on No1 Court this afternoon.
