Carlos Alcaraz Wins Vienna – and his Fourth ATP Title of the Year

Carlos Alcaraz made it a magnificent seven straight victories against the battling Australian, Alex de Minaur.
No wonder the underdog called the world’s most exciting player “annoying” afterwards.
De Minaur simply couldn’t replicate the heroics he conjured against the new world number one Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals.
Alcaraz broke straight away and raced through the first set with considerable ease. The second was more of a contest, but Carlitos didn’t drop a set all week.
The 6-1, 6-4 score-line was a fair reflection of the one-way traffic as the Spaniard continued to finish 2026 on a high.
Carlos Alcaraz should be in magnificent shape by the time we reach Wimbledon 2027 next summer.
His fourth title of the year became the 28th of his stellar career. Already Carlitos had landed the Australian Open, Doha and Tokyo before victory in Vienna.
Not bad for a player who spent most of the year nursing a serious wrist injury instead of starring at the big tournaments.
And against Alex De Minaur, the game plan was to quickly neutralise the qualities that could have caused a problem.
Carlitos explained: ‘He’s really fast and you have to earn every point. I tried to be aggressive and show him that if he wants to win he has to be more aggressive and smarter than me.
‘I’m just really happy that I found my way and played great. It’s been a really emotional and amazing week for me.
‘I learned a lot and I’m gaining more confidence playing on indoor courts.’
And that’s just what Alcaraz needs, with the Paris Masters and year-end finals just around the corner.
De Minaur looked at his winless run against Carlos and admitted: ‘I will say one thing. It’s very annoying to play against you.’
But for everyone else, the spectacle of Carlos Alcaraz in full and glorious flow is something to treasure.
