Taylor Townsend Leads American Charge As Brits Bow Out

US Open

August 30, 2025

Taylor Townsend is the best doubles player in the business. But fifth seed Mirra Andreeva probably didn’t expect her to be quite so good in the singles.

And no one can deny that Taylor Townsend has become the big story of the first week at the US Open.

First the unseemly stand-up argument with Jelena Ostapenko over tennis etiquette. The American wasn’t about to be accused of lacking class and education without fighting back.

Then came her stunning comeback from a break down against Andreeva to win 7-5, 6-2 early this morning.

‘Thanks for everyone who has supported me in the last 48 hours,’ said Townsend after her latest win. ‘This is bigger than me. It’s about representation.’

Taylor Townsend and her feisty versatility will make people sit up and take notice at Wimbledon 2026 too!

And tennis fans worldwide will also have noted how well other American women are doing at Flushing Meadows.

Jessica Pegula and Ann Li face off next. Coco Gauff and Amanda Anisimova are also prominent US survivors.

Meanwhile Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul carry American hopes in the men’s singles, following Ben Shelton’s retirement with a shoulder injury.

Sadly the Brits have no representation going into the second week when it comes to the singles.

Cameron Norrie couldn’t handle 51 Novak Djokovic winners and 18 aces. But the Brit broke and led the match briefly in the third until his self-belief evaporated.

Emma Raducanu was similarly outclassed by the former Wimbledon champion, Elena Rybakina earlier on Friday.

Jack Draper had preceded Shelton to the treatment table. The two young superstars will come back stronger for the Slams next year.

Ben Shelton and Jack Draper will benefit from their enforced rest. They may even come to Wimbledon 2026 with more in the tank in the long term.

Any break from the relentless schedule will do the bodies of these astonishing young men a welcome favour.

Will you be coming to the biggest major of them all? Wimbledon 2026 will be unparalleled for its fusion of history and drama.
