Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori Win US Open Mixed Doubles
US Open
August 21, 2025
Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori took the US Open mixed doubles title in a victory for the specialists and purists.
They had resented the invasion of the singles superstars into their Grand Slam world. Yet for most of us the experimental format had been fun.
Shortened sets and dramatic mixed doubles battles before the main US Open tournament started had allowed for all kinds of fascinating permutations.
The favourites prevailed eventually. And Errani, the 38-year-old with a Golden Career Slam already under her belt in the women’s doubles, is clearly hungry for more success.
Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori would dearly love to add the Wimbledon 2026 mixed doubles crown to their growing collection.
But their triumph in New York may not be the most memorable thing about early happenings at the US Open.
The partnership between Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz commanded most of the pre-tournament focus.
And in their only appearance, one sensational rally saw supreme Raducanu defence rewarded by a stunning round-the-net winner from the Spaniard.
Her sheer delight at that unlikely moment said much about Emma’s enduring love for tennis – and her high regard for Carlitos too.
But their opponents were the highly skilled Jack Draper and Jessica Pugula, who ultimately prevailed in that all-star match-up.
Emma summoned a polite handshake for her old friend Jack and no more. Set against all the other post-match hugs, this noticeable understatement hinted at off-court intrigue.
Draper was to suffer tennis heartbreak, too. He and Pegula led 8-4 in the decisive semi-final breaker against Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud.
But Casper and Iga promptly took the next six points to progress to the showpiece. And it had been extraordinary to see Swiatek hold her own in shoot-outs against Draper all match.
There was no substitute for years of doubles expertise in the final, though. Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori defeated Swiatek and Ruud 6-3, 5-7, 10-6.
The singles superstars had entertained most of us this week. But their presence had meant the exclusion of many doubles professionals with less charisma.
‘I think this one is for all the doubles players that couldn’t play this tournament. I think this one is also for them,’ said Errani pointedly in her victory speech.
Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori will try to protect the natural order at Wimbledon 2026 as well
But the US Open has already been fun. And we can’t wait for the main action to begin after enjoying this pioneering appetiser.
There’s nothing quite like Grand Slam tennis. And one tournament is more prestigious than all the others.
Wimbledon 2026 will provide the unique fusion of history and glamour we all love. British royals will rub shoulders with Hollywood superstars on the big days.
