Sascha Zverev Revenge Win Sets Up Semi Against Taylor Fritz

Sascha Zverev is slowly growing in confidence with every passing month. And this deserved victory over Carlos Alcaraz will do more than anything to help the German pose a threat to his rivals in the New Year.

A showdown with in-form American Taylor Fritz in Saturday’s semi-final could also tell us the extent of Zverev’s mental development on the big stage.

Alcaraz was certainly second best on Friday. The Wimbledon champion tried to gain a firm foothold in a contest that could have ensured his own progress to the business end of the ATP Finals.

But Zverev was in ruthless mood after suffering a difficult dynamic with “Carlitos” in times gone by.

Sascha Zverev is gradually turning into a potential Grand Slam champion in good time for Wimbledon 2025.

His serve is strong and varied. His movement has improved greatly. And above all, the psychological barrier to significant honours appears to be dissolving.

Zverev could have wobbled when he squandered a clear advantage in the first set and then got sucked into a tie-break. Instead he stayed in the moment to edge the breaker with supreme cross-court athleticism.

And he didn’t make the same mistake in the second set once he had achieved a decisive break. The older man closed out 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 for a spectacular triumph against the more celebrated player.

That left some observers openly claiming that Sascha is playing the best tennis of his life.

‘You guys have got to relax a little bit,’ was Zverev’s wat of playing down the hype. ‘Three fantastic matches but now the semi-finals will be very difficult. Taylor has beaten me a few times at the Slams.’

‘But Sascha couldn’t hide his delight at the way the match had unfolded against Wimbledon superstar Alcaraz. He explained: ‘Alcaraz has beaten me too many times this year so I’m glad to get this one.’

There are so many great rivalries building as we start to look towards the New Year.

Sascha Zverev, Taylor Fritz and Carlos Alcaraz will all surely go deep at Wimbledon 2025 – and make Centre Court fizz with excitement.

For now it’s a joy to see how the drama will unfold at the ATP Finals.
