Alexander Zverev Downs Jannik Sinner in Brutal Epic at US Open
US Open
September 5, 2023
Alexander Zverev is back. He said it and he just proved it in four hours and forty-one dramatic minutes.
The man whose body couldn’t take the humidity was the favourite, Jannik Sinner.
The highly-rated Italian cramped up repeatedly – but you couldn’t fault his courage.
Time and again, the man from the mountains picked himself up and carried the fight back to the German.
But ultimately it was Zverev who triumphed 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 to earn the right to play the phenomenal Carlos Alcaraz.
“Sascha” was aware of the impact his victory would have on the tennis world, where he has faced criticism on a number of levels.
‘I guess I can say I’m back, right? This is what I live for. This is what I absolutely love to do.’
Alexander Zverev has the game to take Wimbledon 2024 by storm too. But reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz will also be lying in wait there.
For now, Zverev can enjoy his moment of glory. A 2020 finalist in New York, he thrives at Flushing Meadows.
‘Until 1.30am in front of a packed crowd on Arthur Ashe Stadium. There’s nothing better,’ he claimed.
We respectfully disagree. Centre Court on a big night is even better. We’re talking the richest of sporting history here. Wimbledon 2024 means a visit to the spiritual home of tennis.
British royalty rubs shoulders with Hollywood superstars at glamorous Wimbledon – and there’s something unique about the classy vibe.
Still, the US Open is special too. And that Zverev versus Alacaraz showdown in the quarter-finals should be a fizzer.
Sascha said: ‘I don’t know how it will end up but I’ll give my absolute best like I always do.
‘I’ll fight until the last moment. Of course I have to recover from this match but I’ll be ready.’
Meanwhile Madison Keys comprehensively defeated the more fancied Jessica Pegula in the all-American battle in the women’s singles.
Keys started faster and never looked back. She beat a strangely disheartened Pegula 6-1, 6-3 – and plays Marketa Vondrousova next.
The Americans are having a great US Open – and one of them could yet win a singles title in New York this year! But would you like to plan further ahead?
