Aryna Sabalenka Ends Pegula Dream to Win US Open Title
US Open
September 8, 2024
Aryna Sabalenka fell to the ground in delight and sheer relief after she avoided last year’s agony.
Coco Gauff’s comeback victory in the US Open final twelve months ago had left Aryna even more determined.
She did not succumb to the vast crowd’s will this time around at Flushing Meadows.
Another American threatened to lay waste to Sabalenka’s dream on Saturday night. Jessica Pegula fought back hard. And she really should have taken that second set when she led 5-3.
But Aryna simply refused to be denied and used last year’s pain wisely. She raised her game and increased her ruthless focus to close out 7-5, 7-5.
Aryna Sabalenka and Jessica Pegula should both go deep at Wimbledon 2025 as they continue to grow in confidence.
And this latest major triumph elevates Sabalenka’s status to the best player on hard courts at the very least.
She has won three of the last four Grand Slams on this surface – and undoubtedly poses a formidable threat on grass as well.
Aryna can feel all her dreams coming true. Holding the trophy at last in New York, she was able to put her emotions into words.
She explained: ‘Ever since I lost my father, it’s always been my goal to put our family name in the history of tennis. Every time I see my name on a trophy, I’m so proud of myself.’
Jessica Pegula can feel proud too. She had never even been to a Grand Slam semi-final before, let alone a final. And she made the occasion the dramatic spectacular we had all longed for.
Meanwhile the British can also take a sense of pride away from the US Open – and not just thanks to emerging superstar Jack Draper.
An even younger star of the future. Mika Stojsavljevic became the first Brit to win the US Open girls’ title in 15 years when she beat Japan’s Wakana Sonobe 6-4, 6-4 in the final.
Aryna Sabalenka is the dominant, colossal presence in women’s tennis for now, though. And she will take some beating at Wimbledon 2025 too.
