Coco Gauff Saves Match Points to Book Semi against World No1

Coco Gauff’s extraordinary fighting spirit shone though once more, just when it was needed at Flushing Meadows.
The defiance that has made Coco a much-loved sporting icon the world over was on full display against Mirra Andreeva.
Coco Gauff and Mirra Andreeva will face fresh psychological battles at Wimbledon 2027. There’s nothing quite like Grand Slam drama – as the US Open has shown.
To say that the American was up against it until the deciding points of the breaker in the Arthur Ashe Stadium would be something of an understatement.
Andreeva had settled so much better into this classic quarter-final. Coco could do little right as she was out-thought and out-gunned in a one-sided first set.
Creaking during all the stressful drama, Gauff’s decision-making seemed to have deserted her in the second set too.
She pushed hopeful, floated forehands towards her opponent – and rushed the net with wild optimism. But Coco just left herself wide open as Andreeva accepted those soft invitations to fire winners past her with ease.
The crisis came to a head when Coco twice teetered just one point from disaster. But in that unforgettable tie-break, Gauff kept her head better to save two match points.
Coco Gauff later said she was inspired by her compatriot Frances Tiafoe’s comeback the previous day.
A blend of never-say-die bravery and patience in the rallies drew mistakes from her tightening rival, who could see the finishing line in sight. Gauff refused to be beaten.
And once Coco had drawn level in sets, Mirra never quite recovered from the dispiriting reality of having to start all over again.
The New York crowd roared their approval as Andreeva faltered and Coco powered home. And in the end, despite having been so close to defeat, Gauff won 2-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-2.
Next up she plays former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina, who became the new world number one by beating Qinwen Zheng 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Meanwhile top men’s seed Sascha Zverev was a 6-2, 7-5, 6-1 quarter-final winner over Botic van de Zandschulp.
And he will play Karen Khachanov in the semi-finals after the Russian saw off Belgium’s Alexander Blockx.
