Coco Gauff Win Upstaged by Zheng Comeback at the US Open

Coco Gauff triumphed in the all-American battle against Iva Jovic to edge towards another shot at the US Open title.
The iconic Coco will now face Mirra Andreeva in the quarter-finals after her 6-1, 6-4 victory over her teenage compatriot.
Gauff is almost unrecognisable from the young woman who used to through agony during service games around a year ago.
If her first serve fails her now, she has a superb second serve in the arsenal to maintain momentum.
The woman who stunned Centre Court at Wimbledon when she was only fifteen years old has truly come of age.
Jovic, in contrast, disappeared into the bowels of the Arthur Ashe Stadium in tears after she saw her Grand Slam dream fade on home territory. She will come back stronger.
And her hugely popular opponent won’t stop seeking ways to improve either, even though her game looks increasingly complete.
Coco Gauff has every chance to win her first grass-court major when she returns to the All England Club for Wimbledon 2027, too.
This year she went deeper than ever before by reaching the Wimbledon semi-finals. Who wouldn’t want to be there to see her take the last two steps at Wimbledon 2027 and win the title itself?
But for now, Gauff is very much focused on trying to land her second US Open crown at Flushing Meadows.
In a sense, however, she is being upstaged by the extraordinary achievements of Chinese qualifier Qinwen Zheng.
It isn’t that Zheng’s quality has ever been in doubt. She only dropped down the rankings due to injuries.
But her comebacks are becoming the stuff of legend in New York. Twice she has bounced back from a seemingly hopeless 0-5 down to triumph.
The first shell-shocked opponent to suffer a collapse was poor Madison Keys, who was within touching distance of tournament progress in the final set.
And the latest victim of Zheng’s never-say-die resurgence from 0-5 down is the usually ruthless Iga Swiatek.
The Pole left the court in tears when her ordeal was over. After cruising to a commanding lead in the first set against the underdog, the wheels had come off.
Incredibly, Zheng took the next seven games to win that opener. And she never really let the number eight seed back into the equation on Ashe after that.
Zheng eventually defeated former Wimbledon champion Swiatek 7-5, 6-3. She plays another winner on grass, Elena Rybakina in the US Open quarter-finals.
Coco Gauff, Qinwen Zheng, Elena Rybakina and Iga Swiatek will all be gunning for glory at Wimbledon 2027 too.
