Frances Tiafoe Aims to Peak for Wimbledon 2026, Kyrgios Edged Out

Frances Tiafoe is delighted to have reached his fiftieth ATP quarter-finals. And it’s the third time he has progressed this far in Stuttgart.
He defeated Rinky Hijikata 6-4, 6-4 with an assured performance. But the American made it clear he has bigger fish to fry.
Frances Tiafoe sees this victory as a stepping stone to reaching his best form in time for Wimbledon 2026. And he made that clear.
Tiafoe said straight after his win: ‘I’m pleased with how I played but I don’t want to peak now. I want to peak at Wimbledon.’
He knows there is nothing greater than putting on a spectacular show on Centre Court or Court No1 at the All England Club in front of a packed crowd.
Frances Tiafoe reached the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2022. And he would dearly love to savour the final stages – as he has done at other Grand Slams.
The signs look good so far, as one of the world’s most popular players swiftly adapts to the tour’s grass surfaces.
Nick Kyrgios would love to go deep at Wimbledon 2026 too. He memorably reached the final in 2022.
But the bad boy of tennis was slowly edged out of his second match back since injury at the start of the year.
The Australian started impressively. He took the first set with a cheeky underarm serve. And he had already hit speeds of 204 kmph with some of his early missiles.
Kyrgios looks fit and lean and capable of performing to a decent standard at Wimbledon 2026.
But his Japanese opponent in Stuttgart wasn’t prepared to follow the warm-up script. Although Kyrgios was two points from victory at 5-5 in the second-set breaker, he couldn’t get over the line.
The punishing consistency of Sho Shimabukuro eventually prevailed 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. That showed why the Japanese is now a top-one-hundred player.
Kyrgios is currently unranked due to his past injuries. But he will hope to receive a wild card for Wimbledon 2026. And if that happens, this match will be seen as a very useful work-out.
Frances Tiafoe and Nick Kyrgios are two of the biggest characters in the game. We look forward to their charismatic presence at Wimbledon 2026. Both men are big box office!
