Alexander Zverev Finally Joins the Grand Slam Champions in Paris
Roland Garros
June 7, 2026
Alexander Zverev is no longer the nearly man. After too many painful years of falling at the final hurdle, he is now the proud owner of a maiden Grand Slam trophy.
What a match! What a superb advertisement for Grand Slam tennis. Even without Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner, you just can’t beat this five-set format for sporting drama.
Alexander Zverev and Flavio Cobolli will bring their thrills and spills to Wimbledon 2026 soon – and we can’t wait!
Zverev became the first German male to win Roland Garros since 1937. Wimbledon winner Michael Stich lost his French final – and the even-more-famous Boris Becker never went past the semi-finals on the Parisian clay.
True, Sascha was lucky that Jannik Sinner wasn’t the Italian on the other side of the net. And the favourite knew this was his big chance. Perhaps his only remaining chance. The pressure told at times, too.
But ultimately he took this tantalising opportunity in dramatic style, seeing off the courageous challenge of Wimbledon quarter-finalist Flavio Cobolli 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1.
Sascha held his nerve when it mattered most and prevailed emphatically. That’s what Grand Slam champions do. And now he can cut his hair, having vowed not to do so until a major was his.
Alexander Zverev can believe in his own temperament at last. His ability was never in doubt. Now he will arrive at Wimbledon 2026 knowing anything is possible.
Even before Sunday’s breakthrough, the 29-year-old had already been to every Grand Slam final bar Wimbledon
Regularly getting knocked out in the the fourth round at the All England club must have felt like an underachievement for a man who can serve at 130mph without thinking. Surely this summer he can push further.
In Paris, Cobolli did test Zverev’s nerve many times as he sought to become the first Italian winner of the French Open for fifty years. Flavio’s returning in the second set was out of this world as he struck back.
But it was the underdog who wobbled at the crucial moment in the third to fall behind again. Now was the time for Sascha to hold firm and silence all his tennis critics at last.
Incredibly he too stuttered, as he began to see the finishing line. And both players broke at will for most of the fourth amid beautiful chaos. Zverev showed signs of cramping and tried to end it but failed. You could almost touch the tension.
Cobolli showed superior courage in closing out a spectacular tie-break. A wonderful match deserved its fifth set. And Zverev’s last-gasp composure deserved Grand Slam glory at last, as Flavio’s errors multiplied during the decider.
