Flavio Cobolli certainly secured Italy’s fourth Davis Cup glory the hard way.
The 23-year-old Wimbledon quarter-finalist knew that history was beckoning as a passionate, 10,000 home crowd went wild in Bologna.
Italy are the first nation to taste Davis Cup triumph three years in succession since defending champions ceased to receive automatic qualification for the final 53 years ago.
And there was no Jannik Sinner or Lorenzo Musetti to lead the charge this time. Their country demanded a fresh hero.
Step forward Cobolli – who offered almost impossible levels of drama over a memorable weekend.
Flavio Cobolli will definitely be one to watch at Wimbledon 2026 after breaking through to the last eight this year.
But for now the precious silverware secured is the Davis Cup – and he did it when all seemed lost.
Cobolli was a set and a break down against Spain’s Jaume Munar, with everything on the line and slipping through his fingers.
And yet the flamboyant Italian hit back to win 1-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 and seal the deal against the odds.
That was the comeback the Italians required after Matteo Berrettini had prevailed 6-3, 6-4 against Pablo Carreno Busta.
But many will point to Cobolli’s unbelievable heroics against Belgium’s Zizou Bergs earlier in finals weekend as the key moment in this happy story.
Cobolli had saved seven match points before he finally took his own seventh in an amazing 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (17-15) climax to that tie.
Flavio Cobolli will bring his unparalleled sense of drama to Wimbledon 2026 as Italians flock to the All England Club.
And the young man’s confidence is growing by the month. He said on Sunday of the way he sealed Davis Cup glory: ‘It’s impossible to describe this feeling. I dreamed a lot of this night.
‘I played an amazing match today. I don’t know how I won.’
And it’s impossible to describe that magical feeling when you walk through the gates to Wimbledon as well!
