Novak Djokovic overcame illness and second-set resistance from Alexandre Muller to avoid becoming another big-name casualty.
Day two of Wimbledon 2025 was historic for the sheer quantity of surprises on show.
Third seed Alexander Zverev and seventh seed Lorenzo Musetti both crashed out. Those shocks came after Holger Rune and Daniil Medvedev had already illustrated how top ten seeds are just as vulnerable as anyone else.
Novak Djokovic believes he can win Wimbledon 2025 after his four-set victory. And why not, with so much uncertainty in the air at SW19?
There was a similar chaotic story in the women’s singles. French Open winner and Wimbledon second seed Coco Gauff was knocked out along with her compatriot Jessica Pegula.
Qinwen Zheng and Paula Badosa had also walked to the early exit door in an opening forty-eight hours of historic carnage.
To lose a total of eight top ten seeds in the opening round was the most at any major in the Open era.
To lose thirteen seeds in all from the men’s draw alone at the very first hurdle was unprecedented.
No wonder Novak is already fancying his chances. He explained: ‘ I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t think I have a chance.
‘I always have a chance. I think I earned my right to really feel like I can go all the way to the title.’
Novak Djokovic would claim an unparalleled 25th Grand Slam title if he won Wimbledon 2025.
Evans countered: ‘It’s my chance to win this match too, and I’ve got to be me. I can’t go into my shell, I can’t give him too much respect.’
And since the Brit won their only encounter in Monte-Carlo, he has earned the right to dream too.
Jack Draper should be even more heartened by all the seeded casualties. One was Alexander Bublik, who beat Draper in the French Open and could have stood in Jack’s way in the third round here.
Next up for the Londoner is Marin Cilic, a Wimbledon finalist in 2017. Draper should prevail to keep his Wimbledon 2025 dream alive.
