Jelena Ostapenko Claims Sixth Straight Win Over Iga Swiatek!

Jelena Ostapenko has just beaten Iga Swiatek for an incredible sixth time in succession.
The former French Open champion is only ranked 24 in the world. In contrast, Swiatek has been in the top two for what seems like forever.
But every time they meet, it’s diminutive Ostapenko who comes out on top – even though her Roland Garros crown came way back in 2017.
Jelena Ostapenko might just pull off a few shocks at Wimbledon 2025 as well. Swiatek will certainly hope to avoid her.
The little Latvian is nearly 28. Yet she always seems to bring her A-game against the Polish favourite.
Iga’s handshake seemed cold at the net following this latest 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 victory for Jelena. Swiatek simply looks sick of the sight of her.
Does Swiatek hate to play Jelena more than Ostapenko likes to play Iga?
Jelena grinned and said: ‘I think it’s both. But I have so much respect for her and what she has done for tennis. And every time I step onto a court with her I know it’s going to be another battle.’
So what is Jelena’s secret? She revealed: ‘I try to be aggressive and take time away from her because when she has time she plays very well.
‘Even if I don’t feel great I will just fight. It was pretty important today that I just kept fighting to the last point.
‘In the last game I was just trying to put as many balls over the net as aggressively as possible to win the match.’
And she did just that. An awesome backhand return arrowed straight back onto Iga’s baseline. That set up match point.
And moments later Ostapenko had worn Swiatek down. Iga swiped a forehand wildly wide and it was over.
Jelena is never intimidated by Iga. The underdog said: ‘She’s a great clay court player but I have won the French Open so I can say that about myself as well.
‘I was fighting but in the second set I didn’t feel my game so much. Then I thought “well that’s done so I will fight to the end and see what happens.” I’m really proud of myself.’
Now Ostapenko plays Ekaterina Alexandrova in her first Stuttgart semi-final. She won’t underestimate her next rival either.
‘I saw the match she was playing [against Jessica Pegula] and she is playing really well now. But once again it’s about the battle – and we’ll see what happens.’
Meanwhile reigning Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz humbled the in-form Arthur Fils 6-2, 6-4 to reach the Barcelona final.
Jelena Ostapenko and Carlos Alcaraz will both be exciting to watch at close quarters when Wimbledon 2025 comes around.
