Barbora Krejcikova followed in the footsteps of the late, great Jana Novotna to win the Wimbledon 2024 women’s singles title.
She defeated the gutsy Jasmine Paolini, who has now lost two Grand Slam finals in little more than a month.
Ultimately, Barbora’s nerve held more firmly than her popular rival. And her elegant stroke play proved more reliable than Jasmine’s punchy style.
Barbora Krejcikova was a worthy winner of Wimbledon 2024 in front of a noisy and exhilarated Centre Court crowd.
Midway through the third and final set of a see-saw contest, Paolini challenged a line call on a first serve. When that didn’t go her way, she failed to compose herself sufficiently and double faulted.
The break secured, Krejcikova pressed home her advantage and closed in for the kill. But Paolini threatened to break back and created a classic final game.
Finally Krejcikova, originally a doubles specialist, closed out on her third Championship point to become Wimbledon champion by a thrilling 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.
A delighted Krejcikova said: ‘It’s just unbelievable what has happened. It’s the best day of my tennis career and the best day of my life. I’d like to congratulate Jasmine, it was a great final. I was the lucky one.
‘I was just telling myself to be brave. Such a difficult match and a great final. No one at home will believe I have won Wimbledon.
‘I think everything that happened when I met Jana Novotna changed my life. Before she passed away she told me to win a Grand Slam. I achieved that in Paris in 2021 but I never dreamed I would win Wimbledon as well.’
Paolini, the first Italian to reach the final at Wimbledon, said: ‘Barbora you played unbelievable. The last two months have been crazy for me. I want to thank my team and my family. I love you.
‘The crowd has been amazing these two weeks and it was just incredible to feel the love from them. Thank you very much.
‘Today I am sad but I have to remember to keep smiling and to be here right now is crazy and it’s been a beautiful two weeks.’
Barbora Krejcikova and Jasmine Paolini produced a women’s final for the ages. How good will the men’s final be on Sunday?
We think it will be truly historic. Will you be on Centre Court too?
