Andy Murray Takes Important Step With Victory In Vienna

Andy Murray never ceases to amaze us and prove the doubters wrong.
And now the legendary British tennis hero has taken another step towards a return to his very best.
Some had suggested that Murray might struggle against top-ten players for the rest of his career.
But he just beat the highly talented Hubert Hurkacz at the Vienna Open.
And the big Pole is the first top-ten player Andy has beaten for fourteen months.
This shows how much physical development Murray has been able to enjoy this year.
More matches have meant improved fitness and more wins.
This is incredibly good news for Wimbledon 2022. Murray will arrive as a serious contender once more!
Most of us thought Wimbledon 2021 would probably be the last Championships of his career.
But Andy loves nothing better than to make people eat their words.
That’s what happened when he beat Alexander Zverev at the Cincinnati tournament in August 2020.
And that was the last time Murray took a top ten scalp – until now.
He has just broken a run of ten consecutive defeats against top-twenty players.
It’s only his second win against a top-ten star since 2017.
And he truly deserved his victory after an epic battle against the younger man.
To beat Hurkacz in such a gruelling duel is an extraordinary achievement and one we should all applaud.
There were significant psychological challenges to overcome as well as the two hours and 41 minutes of demanding sporting combat.
There was the intense disappointment of failing to wrap up the match in a dramatic second-set tie-break.
And perhaps losing his serve early in the decider was a symptom of that.
But Murray is desperate for the victories that will take him back up towards the top where he belongs.
So he dug deep to turn the tide and ultimately triumphed 6-4, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3.
Andy said later: ‘It could have gone either way. I was disappointed to drop serve in the opening game of the third, but thankfully I was able to break back in the next game and from there probably deserved to get over the line.
‘It was a good win in tough circumstances.’
This was a trademark Andy Murray win – and anything similar will have Centre Court roaring again next summer.
The top players can’t feel safe any more. Andy could cause plenty more upsets in the next few months.
Who wouldn’t want to be at Wimbledon 2022 to see Murray, Cam Norrie and Emma Raducanu fly the flag at their home Slam?
