Norrie Dream Run Makes Him The New British Number One
Indian Wells
October 15, 2021
Cameron Norrie downed the dangerous Diego Schwartzman and made it look easy as he reached the semi-finals at Indian Wells.
Now he faces Grigor Dimitrov, the conqueror of both the US Open champion Daniil Medvedev and the in-form Hubert Hurkacz.
Even if Dimitrov proves a battle too far for Norrie, this has been an incredible run in the desert for the likeable 26-year-old.
He has reached his first ATP Masters 1000 semi-final.
And now Norrie is going to take over from Dan Evans as British number one.
He reached the top in imperious style.
Schwartzman is usually a tricky customer with plenty of energy and determination.
But there is something about Norrie this week that has made him irresistible so far.
He took just 73 minutes to dismiss the Argentine 6-0, 6-2. And remember the hot Brit had previously warned us that he hadn’t yet hit top form.
He has now!
Just imagine what Norrie could achieve at Wimbledon 2022 if he continues at this astonishing rate of improvement!
The British are certainly blessed right now with their tennis stars.
Emma Raducanu has set the world alight by winning the US Open.
Andy Murray is steadily battling back to his best after injury.
Dan Evans continues to win over the fans with his feisty attitude and delicate variations.
And Joe Salisbury won two doubles titles at the US Open while almost flying under the radar!
No wonder demand for Wimbledon 2022 is already building.
Roger Federer has vowed to be back at the All England Club in better shape.
Novak Djokovic could make Grand Slam history if he extends his title total in England.
Rafael Nadal should be back with a bang as another all-time-great and constant crowd-pleaser.
And then you have the new rock stars of the men’s game, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Sascha Zverev, still improving all the time.
Throw in Nick Kyrgios, who loves Wimbledon and always pulls in a large audience, and you have a great show already coming together!
For now we should just be happy for Norrie, though.
He said of his latest triumph: ‘I thought I was in for an absolute battle. It’s probably the biggest win of my career. I’m really happy with the way I handled everything.’
We can be confident Norrie will handle Wimbledon 2022 with similar aplomb.
We hope you can be there to enjoy the glamour, the history and the sheer fun with us!
