Federer Wins Again, Andy Murray Trains At Wimbledon
Roland Garros
June 3, 2021
It’s not very often Roger Federer plays the bad boy. But it didn’t do him any harm at Roland Garros.
He still managed to beat Marin Cilic 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 with an incredible display of Grand Slam artistry.
Now we have further proof. Federer is going to be amazing at Wimbledon 2021.
The hunger remains. The movement is balletic. Roger is still poetry in motion.
Federer will thrill the Centre Court crowd one last time at the greatest tournament of them all.
This will surely be his final Wimbledon singles title bid. Who can resist the chance to be able to say: ‘I was there?’
The Swiss master still has so much magic that you just know he believes he can win the Wimbledon 2021 title.
All the old rivals will be there to try and steal his thunder. That’s what is making Wimbledon 2021 such unique box office.
Another fans’ favourite is focusing on Wimbledon early. In fact he is there this week!
Andy Murray is already training at the All England Club.
He will continue to warm up on his favourite Wimbledon grass before making the short journey across London for Queen’s later this month.
That tournament will be an appetiser for the campaign that means everything to Murray – Wimbledon 2021.
We are just weeks away from being able to watch the all-time greats in action at the historic home of tennis.
Murray has played less than the rest recently. But he will have a feel for the courts even before his rivals get there.
Federer, meanwhile, has been showing a feisty side on clay that shows he means business.
Reaching for the towel just as Marin Cilic was shaping up to serve in the second set of their French Open clash, Federer received a time sanction and that sparked an immediate argument.
Although Roger kept it as civilised as possible, his exchanges with the umpire went on for some time.
Eventually he lost that second set but won the longer psychological battle with his opponent.
And later Federer opened up about the controversy with typical good grace.
Of the code violation he said: ‘Honestly I was a bit surprised and shocked that it happened and I got one. It was only later that I realised Marin was a bit upset.
‘Was it Marin pushing me to play extremely fast or me playing extremely slow? I don’t know but I apologise for my part, my bad.’
Roger believed a gentle word of warning from the umpire’s chair would have been more appropriate than anything official.
He added: ‘I asked the umpire why he didn’t warn me and he said he assumed I knew since Marin was ready to serve.’
After a difference of opinion with the umpire, Federer actually asked Cilic: ‘Am I playing too slow for you?’
The Croatian told Federer politely: ‘You know the rule.’ But Federer said he wasn’t actually sure what he was supposed to do if he needed the towel and had to walk to the side to use it between points.
The incident failed to unsettle Cilic at the time. But he too was then warned for taking too much time bouncing the ball early in the crucial third-set tie-break.
Marin won the point in question with a huge ace. But he also knew from that moment that his service routine would be squeezed throughout the rest of the breaker. It clearly unsettled him.
In stark contrast Federer served like a dream when it mattered to go 2-1 ahead in sets.
It was no more than the superstar deserved because he should have gone 4-1 up in games with a second break earlier in the set. Instead he pushed an easy winner too long and invited unnecessary trouble.
But Roger doesn’t let such things worry him for too long. And his form in the fourth was simply dazzling.
Roger admitted: ‘It’s true, I played a very good match, I didn’t think I could play at this level again so soon. I played very well in the tie-break to help conserve my energy for the rest.
‘I haven’t played too much and this is a perfect opponent to help me improve because Marin tested me a lot in defence. I’m so happy to have reached the third round.
‘It’s great to be back, it was a lot of fun playing in an atmosphere like that and I was able to find some energy at the end of that third and then the fourth set too.’
Here at WDH we have already told you that every match Federer manages to play at Roland Garros means he will become even more formidable at Wimbledon.
Roger has just said the same thing! He explained: ‘Every hour I spend on court gives me more information. It’s good for confidence and I’ve trained very hard. I’m pleased I made the choice to come to Paris.’
In a sense it is already mission accomplished.
Federer has shaken off the ring-rust and he is ready to impress at Wimbledon 2021. Andy Murray is already on site with the same ambition!
