Lorenzo Musetti Downs Taylor Fritz To Win Title Again At Last

Lorenzo Musetti won his first ATP title for four years when he took out Taylor Fritz with a devastating display in Lyon.
The Italian triumphed 6-3, 6-4 and barely put a foot wrong against the formidable American in France.
Fritz blinked first during a seemingly never-ending rally on match point. And Musettti lay face down for some time as he realised his wait for glory was finally over.
The Italian is an accomplished Grand Slam performer. He was an Australian Open quarter-finalist this year, a French Open semi-finalist last year and a Wimbledon semi-finalist the year before that.
Lorenzo Musetti could now be building the confidence to go deep once more at Wimbledon 2027.
He certainly isn’t afraid of the big occasion. And yet titles had passed him by since 2022. Now he becomes the fourth Italian to claim a trophy this year after Jannik Sinner, Flavio Cobolli and Luciano Darderi.
Indeed Musetti saved no fewer than four match points against compatriot Cobolli in the semi-finals. It seems his name was finally written on some silverware.
Lorenzo reflected: ‘I saved four match points and then played a fantastic final. I’m really proud and happy at this.
‘The spirit of fight was the key for this tournament. I had an incredible attitude.’
And Taylor Fritz had shown plenty of fight too, downing his fellow American Tommy Paul in the semi-finals,
In truth, there were times Taylor could have impose himself in the final. But he failed to take full advantage of promising positions.
Lorenzo Musetti and Taylor Fritz should be there at the business end of Wimbledon 2027 as they go in search of their first major.
