Carlos Alcaraz: Can He Really Defend His Title at the US Open?
US Open
August 28, 2026
Carlos Alcaraz seems to have made the strange decision to launch his comeback from a tricky wrist injury at a Grand Slam event.
Some have labelled the news no more than a publicity stunt. Trying to win the title in New York from nowhere, very possibly playing a series of five-set matches to do so, seems unlikely.
Carlos Alcaraz will have a much better chance of adding more Grand Slam glory to his list of honours at Wimbledon 2027.
But if Alcaraz is deadly serious and really ready at Flushing Meadows, his likely path to the final has been mapped out.
First up is the powerful Russian, Roman Safiullin. He reached the round of sixteen at Wimbledon 2026 – only to be defeated in four sets by Novak Djokovic.
That’s quite a banana skin for Alcaraz right there. Then would likely come the dangerous Portuguese, Jaime Faria. And third up might be Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi.
If the Alcaraz wrist is still holding up, Carlitos is then forecast to play Alexander Bublik, followed by explosive American Ben Shelton.
Novak Djokovic is scheduled to be waiting in the semi-finals, with number one seed Sascha Zverev waiting in the final.
It would be a miracle if a man who hasn’t played seriously for four months or more could negotiate that draw and still achieve glory.
The likely men’s quarter-finals based on the draw look exciting. Sascha Zverev versus Alex de Minaur, Felix Auger-Aliassime against Flavio Cobolli, Daniil Medvedev versus Novak Djokovic and Ben Shelton against Carlos Alcaraz.
The standout women’s quarter-final could be former Wimbledon champions Iga Swiatek against Elena Rybakina.
The highly-fancied American, Coco Gauff would probably play Mirra Andreeva at that stage. But we’ll soon see how it all unfolds.
Carlos Alcaraz will show us soon enough whether he can take the heat so soon at the US Open. But Carlitos will surely be back to his best at Wimbledon 2027!
