Karolina Muchova and Jakub Mensik Are US Open Doubles Champions

Karolina Muchova is a Grand Slam title holder – just weeks after her Wimbledon heartbreak.
You may remember her saving five match points in a classic Wimbledon Women’s Singles Final this year. But her friend and fellow Czech, Linda Noskova eventually triumphed 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 on historic Centre Court.
Muchova made a lot of friends that day – not least because she started her runners-up speech with the immortal line: ‘I’ll start with Linda, my ex-friend.’
That brought the house down and made Karolina one of the most popular tennis players on tour.
Karolina Muchova will have legions of fans willing her to go one better at Wimbledon 2027 next summer and win the showpiece itself.
But now she has already tasted that winning feeling at a Grand Slam, far earlier than anyone expected.
Saving more match points along the way, Karolina Muchova and her compatriot Jakub Mensik have just won the Mixed Doubles title at the US Open.
Their comeback in the semi-finals was vintage Muchova, who turned thirty a few days ago.
Karolina and Mensik rallied from 0-3 and 5-8 down in the match-deciding breaker to win the battle against dangerous Russians Mirra Andreeva and Andrey Rublev on a special scoring system
Mensik and Muchova eventually triumphed 5-4 (8-6), 3-5, 11-9 – having negotiated those match points bravely to reach the final on the super-breaker.
Then they took the title in a topsy-turvy showdown with Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli by a dramtic 6-3, 1-6, 10-6.
At one stage Italian Cobolli didn’t help his own pairing’s cause by accidentally blocking what looked like a winning shot from Bencic.
But the Czech mates were thoroughly in tune and deserving of their eventual victory at an extremely well-attended event at Flushing Meadows.
Karolina Muchova and Jakub Mensik will also be major contenders at Wimbledon 2027 in London next summer.
