Alexandra Eala Knocks Out Reigning Champion at Wimbledon

Wimbledon

July 5, 2026

Alexandra Eala is the new sensation at Wimbledon 2026 after she knocked out reigning champion Iga Swiatek.

And last year’s other finalist, Amanda Anisimova has gone too. Former Australian Open winner Madison Keys beat her compatriot in three pulsating sets on Centre Court.

Alexander Eala and Madison Keys are making an unexpected impact at Wimbledon 2026!

Today, No1 Court is the place to be if you want to see American women do battle to reach the second week. Jessica Pegula takes on teenage starlet Iva Jovic first up at 1pm.

And later on, Coco Gauff will have her work cut out to beat the dangerous Swiss, Belinda Bencic.

You could say the same about Novak Djokovic, who will need all his skill and experience to defeat dark horse Roman Safiullin in the curtain-raiser on Centre Court at 1.30pm.

But the moment belongs to the 21-year-old Filipina who shocked Swiatek with her dramatic 7-6 (11-9), 6-2 victory. The Pole just seemed to lose heart after that first-set breaker reverse.

Alexandra Eala has now gone further at Wimbledon 2026 than she has at any Grand Slam. She faces 2024 finalist Jasmine Paolini next on Monday.

And a delighted Eala had to fight back the tears as said: ‘I’m really emotional. Maybe for someone like Iga or Serena or Venus this achievement may seem small. But for someone who grew up in the Philippines…

‘I went to train with my brother and my grandfather every day after school. With my ruffled socks and my light-up shoes and my chubby cheeks! So to that little girl, this is everything.

‘But because I’m emotional, it does not mean I’m satisfied. So next round – let’s go!’

With this sort of momentum, not many would bet against her beating Paolini to reach her first major quarter-finals.

And for another Wimbledon star, ambitions are even greater. Taylor Fritz is flying the flag for America after he took down Lorenzo Sonego in four.

Fritz faces the formidable and unpredictable Alexander Bublik next for a place in the quarters. Bublik defeated Frances Tiafoe on Saturday.

Alexandra Eala and Taylor Fritz are definitely contenders when the second week of Wimbledon 2026 gets under way.
