Aryna Sabalenka Downs Naomi Osaka to Reach Roland Garros Quarters
Roland Garros
June 2, 2026
Aryna Sabalenka has huge ambitions to enter the history books this summer.
For now, she is focused on winning the French Open for the first time. But she has never prevailed at Wimbledon either.
Sabalenka might well be triumphant in Paris, though there will be many trying to stop her. And if Aryna does indeed win Roland Garros, then she travels to London with an extra incentive.
Aryna Sabalenka could complete a Career Slam at Wimbledon 2026, should everything go to plan in the coming weeks.
She came through the much-anticipated slugfest against Osaka with comparative ease. The first set was the most competetive before Naomi faded.
Sabalenka romped home 7-5, 6-3 – and plays the dangerous 25th seed Diana Shaider in the quarter-finals.
Aryna said of Osaka: ‘She’s such a great player and she plays super-aggressive tennis. I’m happy with how I was able to put the pressure back on her. Super happy with my serve. Also I’m super pleased with the performance overall today.’
But Ukraine already knows it will have a semi-finalist ready to try and disrupt Sabalenka’s Parisian dream.
Elina Svitolina plays the in-form Marta Kostyuk today for the right to progress at Roland Garros. Both stars have the firepower be formidable forces at the business end of the tournament.
And in the men’s singles, Italy also knows it will have a semi-final representative – despite the downfall of world number one Jannik Sinner.
Former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini takes on his compatriot Matteo Arnaldi in the quarters tomorrow.
Arnaldi defeated America’s Frances Tiafoe in an absolute classic overnight. Tiafoe led 4-1 in the final set – but just couldn’t get over the line.
And eventually Arnaldi won it 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (5-7), 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 in a marathon five hours and twenty-six minutes.
Aryna Sabalenka won’t be playing five sets at Wimbledon 2026. But her awesome power will still be sure to thrill spectators on Centre Court.
