Rafael Jodar and Joao Fonseca Are Teenager Heroes in Paris!

Rafael Jodar shook his head in mild disbelief as he contemplated a Roland Garros quarter-final appearance at the age of nineteen. By the end of the night, he wasn’t the only one!
The Spanish sensation had just surged back to overwhelm a much older compatriot in a five-set thriller. Jodar eventually defeated Pablo Carreno Busta by using his powerful forehand to end a pulsating marathon 4-6, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2.
Unsurprisingly at his tender age, Jodar had been too eager in his stroke play early on. Yet he had the maturity to realise his mistake – and then work out how his own young hands could still decide the outcome.
Rafael explained: ‘I tried not to rush the shots and not to make a lot of unforced errors. I think that was the key in the first two sets, so I tried to change that.’
And having done so, the talented teenager never looked back. Now he faces the mighty Alexander Zverev in the quarters. But Jodar will be able to play with no pressure on his shoulders whatsoever.
Rafael Jodar is already earning a reputation that will make him the dangerous new kid whom no one wants to play at Wimbledon 2026!
And there is another nineteen-year-old making even greater waves right now. Joao Fonseca had already knocked out Novak Djokovic in a scenario that had been foreseen by Wimbledon Debenture Holders.
Now the popular Brazilian has beaten two-time French Open finalist Casper Ruud by a relatively comfortable 7-5, 7-6 (10-8), 5-7, 6-2.
You could argue that Ruud’s backhand let him down. But Fonseca’s booming forehand was far more decisive in a contest he always seemed likely to win.
Now the phenomenal Joao takes on another formidable youngster, Jakub Mensik. The cool Czech took five scintillating sets to defeat Andrey Rublev. And Mensik is only twenty himself!
