Novak Djokovic Struggles then Falls Early on the Roman Clay
Locker Room
May 8, 2026
Novak Djokovic came, he saw…and he left early.
That’s not how it’s supposed to go for the greats in Rome. But we only witnessed flashes of genius from the best in tennis history.
Novak Djokovic will still believe he can come to Wimbledon 2026 and go deep on Centre Court.
Who knows, if the stars align, he might even win the elusive 25th Grand Slam that will take him clear of Margaret Court in the history books.
But those who witnessed him fall in the round of 64 in the Italian capital probably wouldn’t bet on another major for Novak.
The match started encouragingly enough for the Serb against his 20-year-old Croatian opponent.
But then the feisty Dino Prizmic found his rhythm, forgot that he is only world number 79…and pulled off a stunning 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 comeback.
This must surely be the biggest moment of Dino’s career – even though he created a different upset quite recently by beating Ben Shelton in Madrid.
Novak meant more. He was like a god in the Prizmic household as the younger man was growing up.
Dino dreamed of being like Djokovic. Victory against his hero is something way beyond those boyhood dreams. Quite simply the experience of a young lifetime.
‘Nole, it was a pleasure,’ scribbled the triumphant underdog on the courtside camera. That must be an understatement.
Djokovic won’t make excuses, even though he seemed to be suffering from nausea and breathing problems as he slumped to 0-4 in the second.
We wondered whether Novak would finish the set, let alone the match. At least some valiant resistance helped him save face.
But Djokovic hit too many energy-saving drop shots when it really mattered. Prizmic was wise to the tactic in the big moments – and took full advantage.
Novak Djokovic will come back fitter and stronger for Wimbledon 2026. It could even be his last significant appearance on a major stage after a stellar career.
