Roger Federer in graceful motion on a Grand Slam tennis court.
We thought we had seen the last of his magical movement and effortless stroke play.
After all, he is 44 years old now – and his truly competitive tennis days are behind him.
But fans who turn up for the curtain-raiser ceremony at the Australian Open are in for a treat.
The Swiss superstar will team up with fellow legend Andre Agassi – as well as Aussie veterans Lleyton Hewitt and Pat Rafter – for an exhibition match.
Roger Federer and Andre Agassi would attract thousands to Centre Court at Wimbledon 2026 if they were given the chance to do something similar.
For now the focus will be on Melbourne – and the chance for the world’s most popular player to create more memories.
Federer said: ‘It feels like a lifetime ago that I coined the phrase “the Happy Slam” for the Australian Open.
‘It still makes me smile when I think about all the moments I’ve had there. I’ve experienced so many emotions on Rod Laver Arena.
‘The joy of lifting [the trophy] six times. The honour of playing in front of Rod Laver himself…
‘Coming back to win the Australian Open in 2017 is one of my most treasured Grand Slam memories. Backing it up to win in 2018 was another dream come true in Melbourne.
‘I’ve been thinking it’s really cold here in Switzerland. I need to make a trip again and head back.
‘I can’t wait to come down under again and create more fantastic moments with all the Aussie fans.’
But Federer has even more magical memories stored up from winning no fewer than eight singles titles at Wimbledon!
Roger Federer would surely love to play an exhibition match on Centre Court next summer at Wimbledon 2026!
What better way to salute the fans at his spiritual home, while he can still play to an admirable standard?
We’ll see if it happens.
