Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner Face Tougher Tests at ATP Finals

Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner had relatively gentle opening matches at the ATP Finals. All that will change from today!
True, Carlitos didn’t have it easy in the first set against Alex de Minaur – or indeed the breaker in their curtain-raiser clash. But once that early danger was navigated, a 7-6 (7-5) 6-2 victory became straightforward.
You sense that Taylor Fritz will provide an even more gruelling test of the Spaniard today.
Fritz it was who threatened the champion’s passage to the final at Wimbledon last summer. There, Alcaraz was deposed by Sinner in another classic.
Carlos Alcaraz and Taylor Fritz may well clash again at Wimbledon 2026. They have the power and ability to thrill us all on Centre Court.
For now, we can look forward to this afternoon’s drama in Turin. And the American has settled in well, defeating Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 6-4 in his own opener.
Sinner began his campaign with a relatively routine 7-5, 6-1 victory over Felix Auger-Aliassime.
As with Alcaraz, there were moments in his first set at these ATP Finals when he definitely didn’t have the upper hand. And as with Carlitos, the second set pretty much took care of itself.
But Sinner faces the in-form Alexander Zverev when he plays again on Wednesday. That will be a whole new proposition.
Zverev has won this event twice before. He is a constant threat to those ranked above him when it comes ot the ATP Finals.
“Sascha” beat Ben Shelton in a bruising encounter in his first match. The second-set breaker was a classic – and it took courage for Zverev to prevail 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).
Even so, Sinner looks almost unbeatable indoors these days. It’s going to be a fantastic fight, full of fireworks.
The ATP Finals have only just begun. But they’re about to warm up very quickly indeed. And Carlos Alcaraz has said he relishes the tournament more this year, whereas before he felt jaded.
Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner will do battle for supremacy eventually in Turin, you suspect. And who wouldn’t love another Centre Court final featuring these two superhuman sportsmen at Wimbledon 2026?
