Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios Light Up Brisbane

Novak Djokovic is having such fun already in Australia that you start to wonder whether he has unleashed a free spirit within himself.
Could the greatest of all time have just reinvented himself as fun-loving Novak, hugely loved the world over for his relaxed attitude to the sport he adores?
The showmanship of Nick Kyrgios has certainly helped. Tweeners in epic rallies, instant doubles chemistry bubbling away between two very different men. Spectators can’t get enough of it.
Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios would make a stunning doubles combination for Wimbledon 2025.
The Centre Court crowd would go crazy on warm summer evenings to see these superstars and former Wimbledon final adversaries team up in London.
But for now you sense Djokovic is also trying to generate something else. Something that could take him on a carefree journey to a deep and demanding place during in a Grand Slam fortnight.
Many doubt Novak can get over the line at a major these days. The relentless pressure creates all kinds of fatigue.
To win another Grand Slam at the age of 37 requires not just physical fitness but mental freshness too.
Indeed Roger Federer somehow managed to release himself from all the pressure of greatness at a similar age to win two Australian Open titles in the twilight of his career. How? He simply had fun.
And that’s precisely what Novak Djokovic is doing in Brisbane after a wonderful doubles adventure with his former enemy and new friend Nick Kyrgios.
True, the highly fancied Michael Venus and Nikola Metkic ultimately defeated Djokovic and Kyrgios in a hugely enjoyable and entertaining contest 6-2, 3-6, 10-8.
But it hardly seemed to matter. This was the second time Nick and Novak had thrilled the Brisbane crowds with their trickery, showmanship and sheer sense of fun.
Previously they had edged a cliff-hanger against Alexander Erler and Andreas Miles 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 10-8 in an exhibition atmosphere Down Under.
They even finished with a spectacular mid-air chest-bump first time out, as the unlikely bromance continued unabated.
Novak Djokovic is loving tennis once more as he warms up for the first Grand Slam of the season.
With ten Australian Open singles titles already under his belt, Novak believes the tournament in Melbourne could take him clear of Margaret Court – and offer up that elusive 25th major.
The singles title would end all historical argument about who is the stand-alone GOAT.
Djokovic has already enlisted the help of Andy Murray with that aim in mind. And we’ll know more about Novak’s current singles prowess when he takes on Gael Monfils in Brisbane soon.
But we’re convinced Djokovic is going about everything the right way. He’s having fun – with a deadly serious ambition lurking beneath the smiles. And there’s nothing wrong with that.
