Jannik Sinner Is the US Open Champion for the First Time

US Open

September 9, 2024

Jannik Sinner stormed to his first US Open title and showed the world why he is currently the very best on this surface.

Hard courts hold no fears for the first Italian to win the US Open title. He took the Australian Open this year too.

Taylor Fritz tried to launch a comeback before it was too late. Who knows what might have happened had the American closed out that third set?

He led 5-3 and the crowd on Arthur Ashe came to life as they sensed the tide turning. Sinner’s body can seem more fragile when placed under the sustained pressure of a marathon contest.

But this was new territory for Taylor. His first Grand Slam final. Perhaps he lacked the self-belief to ask Sinner the questions the world wanted to hear.

Jannik Sinner will find Wimbledon 2025 harder to win. His arch-rival Carlos Alcaraz has been imperious there for the last two years.

New British favourite Jack Draper will continue to grow in stature and provide a formidable threat on grass. Draper’s home Grand Slam event could offer another stunning launchpad.

But for now we should simply admire Sinner’s resilience and all-round brilliance. He shrugged off the remnants of a doping scandal and lingering family health concerns to focus on the task in hand.

The result of that stubborn psychological strength was a relatively comfortable 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 victory. It has been an action-packed US Open with surprises galore. Perhaps we expected too much of the showpiece.

But grass is a great leveller and Wimbledon 2025 will probably tell a more dramatic story when it comes to the final.

Jannik Sinner’s longest adventure at Wimbledon took him as far as the semi-final in 2023. But it was Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz who were destined to contest the first of their two jaw-dropping finals.

A young man who has emerged as the best player in the world will want to do better at Wimbledon 2025. The most prestigious tournament is calling from afar for the man of the moment.

Jannik Sinner will make success at Wimbledon 2025 one of his big ambitions. Could it be a classic Sinner v Alcaraz final at the All England Club?

For now Jannik will savour his triumph in New York and what it means to him. He said: ‘I’d like to dedicate this title to my aunt because she is really not feeling well. I don’t know how much longer I’ll have her in my life.’

Taylor Fritz lamented his inability to give America the US Open champion it has been waiting for. ‘I know we have been waiting for a champion for a long time so I’m sorry I couldn’t get it done,’ said the improving star.

But the USA has an extraordinary strength in depth going into 2025. Any number of Americans could go deep at Wimbledon.
