Tommy Paul has won his first grass court title just days before Wimbledon 2024.
The in-form American must now feel confident of going deep at the big one.
Tommy Paul just won Queen’s. Now he is a genuine contender for Wimbledon 2024. And that will delight tennis fans flying over from the USA for the big one.
Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula – who just won Berlin in dramatic style – are shaping up to cause similar shockwaves in the women’s tournament. There could be plenty of reasons for Americans to cheer at the All England Club this year.
Tommy Paul beat Lorenzo Musetti 6-1, 7-6 (10-8) to taste maiden glory on grass. He looks so comfortable and compact on one of the sport’s trickiest surfaces.
The unsung star’s natural balance seems to give him a platform to unleash extraordinary power on his unsuspecting opponents from the baseline.
Paul is the first American to win Queen’s since Sam Querry back in 2010. He also becomes the USA’s number one male player today.
Previous winners at the Queen’s Club have included American legends such as Andy Roddick, John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors and Pete Sampras.
McEnroe, Connors and Sampras all went on to win Wimbledon more than once. Why shouldn’t Tommy Paul believe he can do the same?
For now, he is just delighted to have joined those legendary compatriots who took the title at Queen’s.
Paul said: ‘It means everything. Going through the hallways here, the locker room, the names that are on the wall! It’s unbelievable and it was always my goal to put my name there.’
Tommy Paul isn’t the only in-form contender hoping for glory at Wimbledon 2024. Jannik Sinner is also on fire for the first time on grass.
The Italian won Halle for his maiden title as world number one. He defeated the dangerous Hubert Hurkacz 7-6 (10-8), 7-6 (7-2). Now he might just be favourite to win Wimbledon 2024!
Sinner said: ‘I’m very happy about this tournament. Winning for the first time on grass court is a good feeling.’
Meanwhile American superstar Jessica Pegula saved five match points to beat Anna Kalinskaya 6-7 (0-7) 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) in Berlin. What spirit the USA players are showing!
