Novak Djokovic Moves Clear of Roger Federer for Major Wins

Roland Garros

June 4, 2024

Novak Djokovic looked for all the world an injured and beaten man against Argentine ace Francisco Cerundolo.

He didn’t even move to try and stay in some rallies. It appeared he was about to be put to the sword as the underdog closed in for the kill.

But as we have seen so many times before, it wasn’t the end after all. Cerundolo saw the finishing line and somewhere deep inside he didn’t seem to think he deserved victory.

Meanwhile Djokovic gambled his body in more daring style, simply to survive. He had also taken a tablet for his injured knee – and was feeling the pain less.

The result was a quite extraordinary Djokovic comeback. The great man reached the quarter-finals against the odds with a 6-1, 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory.

‘I don’t know how I won,’ said the three-time Roland Garros champion.

And that win took on historic proportions when you looked at the all-time list of triumphs at Grand Slams.

Novak Djokovic has now won more major matches than the legendary Roger Federer. Yet another way to tell us that the Serb is the best of all time.

Djokovic has now won 370 matches to Federer’s 369 at Grand Slams. Rafael Nadal trails them on a still-impressive 314. Then you have to go back to Jimmy Connors on 233, Andre Agassi on 224, and Ivan Lendl on 222.

But can Novak win his 25th major this year at Roland Garros? It seems unlikely now. His body is in trouble and his energy resources have been depleted by successive five-setters. He didn’t even seem sure he could play on at the French Open after this gruelling experience.

Novak Djokovic may have to accept that Wimbledon 2024 is now his best – and perhaps even his last – chance to move clear of Margaret Court’s 24 Grand Slams.
