Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal Prepare for Roland Garros

Roland Garros

May 24, 2024

Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal face formidable tests in their final Roland Garros Grand Slam campaigns.

And we’ll be watching carefully to see what bearing events in Paris might have on the possibility of their appearance at the All England Club in July.

Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal would both receive emotional welcomes at Wimbledon 2024 – if they’re able to grace Centre Court one last time.

For now, their focus will very much remain on Paris and the powerful opponents standing in their way.

The veteran Brit faces a former French Open champion in Stan Wawrinka. At least Sir Andy leads their head-to-head 13-9.

Murray won their last clash in Cincinnati in 2022. Stan can point to his own victory over the Scot at Roland Garros in 2020 for encouragement.

It promises to be a fascinating clash – and a dramatic Grand Slam climax for at least one tennis giant on clay. Neither man will want their journey to end so soon at the latest Parisian major.

Murray does at least have the added joy of a doubles adventure with his compatriot Dan Evans. They were awarded wild cards for the purpose – and have potential Olympic glory in mind too.

But the great Rafael Nadal must be wondering how long his final Grand Slam bow at Roland Garros will last, after he was handed a nightmare opening-round draw.

Nadal has won the tournament an extraordinary fourteen times. But on this occasion he will come up against a younger favourite in his very first contest.

Alexander Zverev is tipped to win the French Open this year. If Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic fail to find top form, he is surely a strong contender.

Yet Nadal is a fighter and he will bring a gladiator’s spirit to this match. He also knows that Zverev can be a slow starter in tournaments. Sascha has a history of psychological inconsistency on the big occasion.

If the very best Zverev turns up, he will surely end the dreams of Nadal on his favourite stage, though.

Whatever happens, Rafa will go down fighting – and give his all to pull off a shock.

Nadal said: ‘The French Open is the most important tournament of my tennis career. All the things that I lived there, enjoyed there, stay in my heart forever.’

He doesn’t want his last Grand Slam title bid at Roland Garros to end prematurely. But if it happens that way, would it give us the chance to see Rafa at Wimbledon?
