Danielle Collins Wins Miami Title in Her Final Year on Tour

March 31, 2024

Danielle Collins won her first Miami 1000 title – and pushed her ranking up to 22.

Her impressive 7-5, 6-3 defeat of former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina has gotten all of tennis talking.

Raised in Florida, this was the perfect moment for 30-year-old Collins to make her mark. She has already announced her retirement from the WTA tour at the end of this calendar year.

The power and versatility of the American’s performance was something to behold. A truly beautiful backhand lob was later followed by a backhand crosscourt winner to seal the deal.

But it had taken a fourth match point to close out this magnificent contest like that. And the new champion was doubled up for some time afterwards from the sheer effort of it all.

‘That game took a lot out of me and Elena was pushing me all around the court,’ Danielle admitted. ‘At the end I was just like “Thank God.” It all caught up with me.’

With the pressure of expectation apparently receding, and that new seeding status at Grand Slam events to look forward to, Collins is now going to be tough to beat wherever she goes.

Danielle Collins could be yet another American contender for glory at Wimbledon 2024 – if she can gain some momentum through the first week.

We already expect Coco Gauff to do well at Wimbledon 2024. And her close friend Jessica Pegula is never far from the top of our game.

If Danielle can maintain her new ranking, then she can avoid the hardest tests at Wimbledon 2024 until at least the second week.

It will be down to whoever wants the title most at the historic home of tennis once we reach the business end of Wimbledon fortnight.

Collins definitely seemed to want this Miami title more than Rybakina. Having said that, the runner-up managed to stay on the verge of a fightback for most of the match.

Elena had many a break point. But determined Danielle managed to fend her off.

Later Collins said: ‘Now I get to celebrate with friends and family. We’re going to have a great weekend.’

Danielle Collins is yet another reason for American fans to flock to Wimbledon 2024 – and see if one of USA’s finest can lift a singles trophy there.
