Emma Navarro and Coco Gauff Go Deep at Indian Wells

Indian Wells

March 14, 2024

Emma Navarro is the new star of American tennis after she defeated the fearsome Aryna Sabalenka at Indian Wells.

Success for Coco Gauff was far more predictable as the much-loved youngster celebrated her twentieth birthday.

But it was Navarro who stole the limelight – and perhaps we shouldn’t have been so surprised.

Emma Navarro will be another exciting American to watch when it’s time for Wimbledon 2024!

She turned the tables on the reigning Australian Open champion to triumph 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. It’s Emma’s first win over top-five player – but this has been coming for a while.

Navarro has now amassed eighteen wins this season. Amazingly that’s more than Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina! And since Emma is still just twenty-two years old, she looks capable of great things.

She said: ‘I’ve worked really hard to get to this point and compete with the best players in the world. I think that showed today. I’m just excited to get the win and I’m ready for the next one.’

She’ll face another personification of tennis power in the quarter-finals, where Maria Sakkari awaits her.

Meanwhile Coco Gauff was totally dominant against Belgium’s Elise Mertens. In fact Coco’s only problem was the six double faults she notched – mostly towards the end of a 6-0, 6-2 romp.

Coco will need to serve more consistently at the death against Yue Yuan in her quarter-final. But it’s looking exciting for the American women.

Emma Navarro, Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula will lead the charge for American women’s tennis at Wimbledon 2024.

There hasn’t been a better time for American fans to come to Wimbledon – not since Serena Williams passed her peak.
