Alex de Minaur Wins in Mexico – Can Katie Boulter Do Same?

March 3, 2024

Alex de Minaur sensationally defended his title in Mexico – but then declined the opportunity to celebrate.

The Australian is part of a love affair that has the tennis world cheering. And his romance with British player Katie Boulter has left their tennis on fire.

Improving Boulter has reached the final in San Diego and stands one step from extraordinary glory.

With typical loyalty, de Minaur decided to get on an early-morning plane to watch his partner instead of marking his own victory with a night on the town.

Alex de Minaur and Katie Boulter is a love story likely to add even more delicious drama to Wimbledon 2024.

The romance certainly doesn’t seem to be doing either player any harm – they are in the form of their lives!

De Minaur only looked in trouble early on during his Mexican final against the Norwegian hot-shot, Casper Ruud.

He failed to break Ruud’s serve in a marathon opening game and then looked vulnerable temporarily on his own.

But once Alex settled, there was only going to be one winner. He dropped only five points on serve in a 52-miute opening set. Then he clinched the match 6-4, 6-4 in just under two hours.

It’s a rare thing to defend a title on the ATP Tour. The delighted Aussie said afterwards: ‘I thought it was impossible to feel better after what happened last year, but I came back a year later to defend the title and it has been a pleasure.’

Asked about celebrating, he revealed: ‘I can’t, because I have a 6am flight to go and watch Katie play her final, so I’m looking forward to that.’

Boulter faces Marta Kostyuk at Barnes Stadium after the super Brit defeated Emma Navarro 6-3, 6-1 in the semi-final.

What a weekend it would be if both lovers win titles in the space of a few hours! But they’re already making their mark and showing that romance doesn’t have to be a distraction on the tennis court.

Alex de Minaur and Katie Boulter could both go deep at Wimbledon 2024 if they maintain this sort of momentum.
