Cameron Norrie Silences the Local Crowd in Rio

Locker Room

February 24, 2024

Cameron Norrie marched into the semi-finals of the Rio Open despite some extreme provocation.

The defending champion was playing local hero Thiago Seyboth Wild, who staged a second-set comeback.

At one point Norrie, who had served so impeccably in the first set, double-faulted as the tide turned.

The Brazilian crowd roared their approval of the Brit’s mistake.

And Seyboth Wild openly whipped his supporters into a frenzy as they did so.

Cameron Norrie can expect better sportsmanship than that at Wimbledon 2024.

It took the favourite a while to compose himself and return to unleashing the stunning winners the left-hander is famous for.

But Norrie persevered and eventually he triumphed 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 to progress to the semi-finals.

‘I was just really proud of how I fought hard,’ Cam explained later. ‘It was so humid and so tough physically. I managed to break in the end. I’m so proud of myself.’

Another South American will be waiting next – the tricky Argentine, Mariano Navone.

But if Norrie can maintain his level and achieve an even better in-match consistency, then he has a shot at this title once more.

The form book says Norrie should reach the final. He is currently ranked at world number 23 whereas Navone is 113.

The other semi-final sees the dangerous Francisco Cerundolo play Sebastian Baez. Whoever wins that one, Norrie must know deep down he has the firepower to prevail on his day.

The history books are against Norrie retaining his title, though. That’s because no player has ever done it twice in succession in Rio.

The great Rafael Nadal and reigning Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz tried – but only reached the semi-finals the year after winning.

Cameron Norrie, Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz will all hope to bring their best form to Wimbledon 2024.
