Rafael Nadal will set his sights on the two big European Grand Slams now that he is unable to compete in the Australian Open.
The extra rest and further training may even work in the legendary Spaniard’s favour.
He wants to be at his best for the European clay and his spiritual home at Roland Garros.
But he could also have enough left in the tank to go deep at Wimbledon too.
Rafael Nadal deserves a great run at Wimbledon 2024 to mark his final farewell to the All England Club.
And it already seems highly probable that he will never play competitively in Melbourne again.
Rafa explained what has happened to him in a full statement.
He said: ‘Hi all, during my last match in Brisbane I had a small problem with a muscle that as you know made me worried.
‘Once I got to Melbourne I had the chance to do an MRI and I have a micro-tear on a muscle – but not in the same part where I had the previous injury, so that’s good news.
‘Right now I am not ready to compete at the maximum level for five-set matches. I’m flying back to Spain to see my doctor, get some treatment and rest.
‘I have worked very hard during the year for this comeback. And as I always mentioned, my goal is to be at my best level in three months.
‘Within the sad news for me of not being able to play in front of the amazing Melbourne crowds, this is not very bad news – and we all remain positive with the evolution for the season.
‘I really wanted to play here in Australia and I have had the chance to play a few matches that made me very happy and positive.
‘Thanks for all the support and see you soon! Rafa.’
The message is clear. Build fitness and form through the European spring – and then come out with all guns blazing at Roland Garros and Wimbledon 2024.
We can think of nothing better than the great pleasure of welcoming and witnessing Rafael Nadal at his best for Wimbledon 2024.
