Rafael Nadal and Emma Raducanu produced convincing comeback displays after being out of tennis for the best part of the year.
The timing couldn’t be better as they hope for significant Grand Slam action at the Australian Open later this month.
Rafael Nadal and Emma Raducanu on fire at Wimbledon 2024! That’s what regular Centre Court spectators would dearly love to see.
And the powerful Spaniard didn’t seem to be carrying any lingering injuries at he put another big name – Dominic Thiem – to the sword 7-5, 6-1 in Australia.
In fact it seemed as though Nadal had never been away as he found a deft touch at the net in Brisbane to go with his usual mighty forehand.
The hair may be a little thinner – but the fighting spirit remains strong just the same. And those who witnessed Rafa’s long-awaited comeback were almost as pleased as he was that all went according to plan.
Rafa said later: ‘This is emotional because it was probably one of the toughest years of my tennis career without a doubt.
‘To have the chance to play in front of such an amazing crowd was special – and It’s something that makes me feel happy to be back.’
Meanwhile Emma Raducanu suffered a fresh injury scare when she turned an ankle at the Auckland Classic in New Zealand. But she got over it and booked more vital match time at the tournament.
Emma struggled to describe her feelings after beating her friend Elena-Gabriela Ruse 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. Perhaps there was some frustration at missing two match points at 5-3 in the third – but it didn’t matter in the end.
Raducanu explained: ‘It’s a weird one. I didn’t really know how I felt. It was just a bit of a shock. Eight months is a long time to be out.
‘It’s nice to be able to focus on my tennis and what I want to do tactically. I just want to be happy and healthy going into the new season.’
Rafael Nadal and Emma Raducanu will be keen to hit peak form at Wimbledon 2024 during the English summer.
And there will surely be an enormous welcome for both players at the All England Club in July, after all their trials and tribulations.
