Ben Shelton made a massive mark on the US Open – and now he has produced more heroics at the Laver Cup.
He even made a big impression on Aussie legend Rod Laver, after whom the tournament was named.
“Rocket Rod” knows tennis talent when he sees it. And the great news for American fans is that Laver sees further glory for Shelton.
He explained: ‘Shelton is the new player on the tour. We’re going to see him winning a Slam.
‘He’s got one of the biggest serves and he doesn’t make many mistakes.’
Ben Shelton is the new American superstar and he could go deep at Wimbledon 2024!
Imagine being there at the All England club next summer as Shelton, Coco Gauff and the other Americans go for the biggest titles in sports.
North Americans certainly shone as Team World thrashed Europe 13-2 to win the Laver Cup for the second successive year in Vancouver.
And fittingly it was American hot shots Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe who clinched the triumph with a 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-5) victory over Hubert Hurkacz and Andrey Rublev.
Shelton admitted: ‘It’s been crazy for me. I enjoyed being in a team environment. They did a great job cheering me on all week. And I hope I did a good job cheering them on as well.’
Ben Shelton is certainly going to be cheered on all fortnight at Wimbledon 2024!
The new generation is taking over – although Novak Djokovic will certainly be hungry for further historic success on grass.
In the mean time, American legend John McEnroe can reflect on further glory as Team World’s Laver Cup captain.
He said: This was a special year for us. And I’m starting to think three in a row is possible!’
