Novak Djokovic Faces Daniil Medvedev in the US Open Final

US Open

September 9, 2023

Novak Djokovic has the chance to make more tennis history on Sunday.

If he beats Daniil Medvedev in the US Open final, Djokovic will equal Margaret Court’s record 24 Grand Slam titles.

The showdown is a repeat of the 2021 US Open final, won by Medvedev for his one and only major success. But potential glory for Novak has us looking towards next summer.

Novak Djokovic could become the undisputed greatest tennis player of all time at Wimbledon 2024. What an iconic moment that would be!

But this year’s other US Open finalist, Daniil Medvedev will also be pushing to take the Wimbledon 2024 title on this kind of form.

Remember, he reached the semi-finals at the All England Club a few weeks ago. On that occasion Carlos Alcaraz beat him on the way to the title.

Medvedev just took revenge in their US Open semi-final with an extraordinary display of fluency and composure. And he knows he will have to conjure his best tennis yet again to beat Novak Djokovic.

Medvedev downed the much-loved Alcaraz, even after it looked for all the world as though the Spaniard had turned the tide in time to stay on course.

And Daniil’s 7-6 (7-3), 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 victory left observers marvelling at how easy he had made the match look overall.

Medvedev said of the final ahead: ‘The challenge is that you play a guy who won 23 Grand Slams – and I only have one. I managed to play 11 out of 10 against Carlos – and I need to do it again.’

Djokovic will be ready after he too suppressed a fightback from his younger adversary. Novak conjured a wide ace to save set point in the third – and then secured a 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) victory over home-grown sensation Ben Shelton.

The 36-year-old Serb insisted: ‘I still feel I have something in my legs left. These are the occasions I thrive on. This is why I still play.’

Novak Djokovic has one full year left at the top of the sport we love – and that includes bowing out in style at Wimbledon 2024.

Don’t miss the chance to see one of the greatest sportsmen of all time before it’s too late.

Come and savour all the history and glamour at Wimbledon 2024!
