Stefanos Tsitsipas Will Play Andy Murray In Blockbuster Tie!

Wimbledon

July 5, 2023

Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated Dominic Thiem in five sets to book a dream showdown with local favourite Andy Murray.

Centre Court tickets for that particular Thursday classic will be as hot as any in Wimbledon history at this early stage of the fortnight. Tsitsipas has never played on the biggest stage of all. Have you ever watched a match there?

Stefanos Tsitsipas against Andy Murray at Wimbledon 2023! Does it get much better than that in the first week?

Tsitsipas knows that he won’t be getting much support when it comes to the big one on grass.

Stef admitted: ‘I’m not expecting anyone to support me. That’s not my first concern though. I remember witnessing Andy’s first Wimbledon title as a kid.

‘Thinking about it now gives me goose bumps because I felt what he went through during that final. It was so hard for him to close out that last game.

‘Every time I watch that last game it sends shivers all over my body. He is someone who has done so much for the sport and I will go in with a lot respect for him.

‘Hopefully he will bring out my best game. He’s a tough competitor and he won’t give up.

‘I hope we can play Centre Court. I’ve never played Centre Court. The furthest I’ve played is Court One – so let’s pray for Centre.’

Tsitsipas will doubtless get his wish. The nature of the occasion demands Centre Court. And Stef played some great tennis to down Thiem.

He confessed: ‘It was pretty stressful when you’re out there for nearly four hours, it felt forever. Obviously super-glad that it went my way – and Dom brings the best out in me every time we play each other.

‘It creates pressure at the same time. We both fought hard today and put on a show and hopefully everyone enjoyed it. Dominic is a top player and I wish him all the best for the future.’

Meanwhile American hot-shots Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe also negotiated tricky matches, as did Britain’s Katie Boulter.

And defending men’s champion Novak Djokovic became the first man to win 350 Grand Slam matches as he breezed through his own early test.

Stefanos Tsitsipas against Andy Murray will demand everyone’s attention at Wimbledon 2023 for now, though.
