Coco Gauff And Venus Williams Bow Out At Wimbledon 2023

Wimbledon

July 4, 2023

Coco Gauff won’t be launching one of her famous deep runs at Wimbledon this year.

The teenager slipped up against compatriot Sofia Kenin on No1 Court in a three-set thriller.

Gauff was number seven seed at Wimbledon 2023 – and so this defeat represents the first big shock of the tournament.

The twists and turns will keep coming at the All England Club, as the most famous fortnight in sport unfolds.

Coco Gauff had high hopes at Wimbledon 2023 – but she couldn’t find the magic when it mattered.

She reflected: ‘I knew it was going to be a tough first round for me. I tried my best, but it wasn’t enough.

‘I think I have a lot to work on, if I want to improve from this.’

Experts have indicated that Coco’s forehand and her serve need tweaking if she is to reach the next level.

Sofia Kenin won the 2020 Australian Open – but she has slipped down to world number 128 after a tough few years.

The proud American was delighted with her 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 victory and said: ‘This means a lot. I feel like it’s a comeback year for me.

‘I feel like I started off the year well, I was playing well. I had a good feeling that this year would be a good year for me.’

How far can Kenin go? She has the power and she has found her rhythm. It will be interesting to watch her progress.

Meanwhile Venus Williams was always the underdog on Centre Court against Elina Svitolina at the age of 43. And there was a nervous moment when Venus lost her footing and appeared to hurt herself.

But she bravely continued to battle as hard as she could. And as predicted, the Wimbledon 2023 crowd showed their warmth and appreciation for a legend of the game.

Elina took the match 6-4, 6-3 – and Venus wondered whether the surface had caused her downfall after a rain shower.

She explained: ‘I started the match perfectly. I was literally killing it, then I got killed by the grass. Grass is inherently slippery. You’re going to fall at some point. It was just bad luck for me.’

Coco Gauff and Venus Williams have added to the drama of Wimbledon 2023 despite their early exit in the singles.

There will be plenty more magic to savour on Day Two – and we can’t wait for the rest of the action.
