Carlos Alcaraz and Andy Murray Sail Through At Wimbledon 2023

Wimbledon

July 4, 2023

Carlos Alcaraz looks increasingly comfortable on grass – and now he is at home on the show courts of Wimbledon too.

The Spaniard romped around No1 Court as though he had been playing there all his life.

And that is ominous for his opponents, as the world number one makes his way through the tournament.

Alcaraz defeated Jeremy Chardy of France 6-0, 6-2, 7-5. He was so relaxed that he tried trick shots when he didn’t need to – and went for killer winners when he’d had enough fun.

Carlos Alcaraz is going to be hugely entertaining at Wimbledon 2023!

He said later: ‘I think I played really well at the beginning of the match. In the third set, he found his level. I was in trouble but I like to play rallies.

‘I like to play battles, and I’m really happy to have played a great level.’

Chardy can be satisfied with his final set of competitive action – and now the 36-year-old will retire.

For Alcaraz, the Wimbledon story is only just beginning, you sense.

Meanwhile Andy Murray delighted the likes of Roger Federer and The Princess of Wales on Centre Court.

Andy is enjoying every last moment he can get at his home Grand Slam.

He was playing fellow Brit Ryan Peniston – and showed a ruthless side as he preserved precious energy for the next round.

Murray won 6-3, 6-0, 6-1 – and couldn’t hide his delight afterwards.

He said: ‘Amazing to be back here playing on Centre Court. I was quite nervous at the beginning. I played some good stuff as the match went on.

‘It’s been a long time since I felt this good physically coming into Wimbledon. I’m hoping I’m fit and ready for a good run.’

It’ll be tough for Murray against Dominic Thiem or Stefanos Tsitsipas in the next round. But that big-name classic is for Thursday’s lucky fans.

Of Federer and the Princess, Murray said: ‘It was amazing to have some royalty here – and also some tennis royalty as well.’
