Coco Gauff Wins Battle Of Teenagers, Iga’s Double Bagel!

Roland Garros

June 4, 2023

Coco Gauff will be carrying American hopes into the second week at Roland Garros.

Sloane Stephens is also in the running – but she faces a very tough match against Aryna Sabalenka this evening.

Meanwhile Frances Tiafoe lost a late-night fight with Sascha Zverev in four sets – and Taylor Fritz had fallen earlier in the day.

At least the best American men will be that little bit fresher for Wimbledon 2023 in a few short weeks!

Fritz in particular has a great chance to go deep at the magical All England Club.

Coco Gauff will come to Wimbledon 2023 already an established favourite – and she is still only nineteen!

She came back from a set down to beat Mirra Andreeva 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 6-1.

It was an emphatic response to an early reverse from someone who had lost her last fifteen matches after falling behind.

Gauff revealed later that she told herself not to ‘freak out’ about that statistic and the perilous situation against the younger girl.

Andreeva is just sixteen. And she showed her age when she blasted a ball into the crowd in sheer frustration at not converting a set point when 6-4 up in the breaker.

For that offence, she received a code violation. And several seasoned observers felt the punishment could have been a default.

With typical good grace, Gauff leapt to the defence of her young rival later.

Coco said: ‘Mirra is super-young and has a big future. I remember I played here when I was sixteen – so she has a lot to look forward to. I’m sure you’ll see a lot more matches between us.’

Those who play the fearsome Iga Swiatek don’t generally have very much to look forward to.

And the fearsome Pole served up a double bagel to China’s Wang Xinyu to underline her top credentials.

Swiatek dismissed talk of “Iga’s Bakery” after her latest 6-0, 6-0 demolition job.

But we can expect Swiatek and Gauff to go far at Roland Garros again this year.

Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek will be star attractions at Wimbledon 2023 as well!

Come and see the best women battle it out on the famous grass of Centre Court this summer.

We’ll get you some of the best seats in the house to make your day especially memorable!
