Carlos Alcaraz has been defeated in one of the biggest ATP shocks of all time.
Fabian Marozsan is a new name to remember as we approach Wimbledon 2023.
The Hungarian 23-year-old is number 135 in the world – and no one gave him a chance against the magnificent Alcaraz.
And yet Marozsan somehow beat Madrid champion Carlitos 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) to reach the last sixteen.
Carlos Alcaraz will be back to his best in time for Wimbledon 2023. But let’s all watch out for Fabian Maroszan too!
The underdog looked down and out in the second set tie-break, yet stormed back for a shock victory just when we were all preparing for a third set.
Marozsan said: ‘I’m very, very happy. I couldn’t have imagined this one. It was my dream last night. We talked about doing something special and I just beat the best in the sport.
‘I slept well and everything was perfect today. The plan, the weather, the court.
In the tie-break, I was 1-4 down and it’s amazing that I won six points in a row. I don’t know what to say.’
Fabian doesn’t need to say anything. His tennis has just done the talking. An explosive forehand and a deft drop-shot kept Alcaraz guessing.
There’s amazing power and poise in Fabian’s wiry frame.
But perhaps most impressive of all was the nerve Marozsan showed as he closed in for the giant-killing.
No one could remember a bigger surprise on the ATP Tour as the shockwaves reverberated around the sport.
You could argue that Alcaraz was taking a little holiday mentally, after the exertions of winning the biggest tournament in his native Spain.
But he will have to return to form quickly if he is to make sure he goes deep at the French Open.
In Rome, Alcaraz just made an uncharacteristic 24 unforced errors on his way to a stunning defeat in two sets. In perfectly mirrored contrast, the outsider struck 24 winners.
Carlos Alcaraz will come out with all guns blazing at Wimbledon 2023 – we can be sure of that.
But tennis is so gloriously unpredictable that we never know exactly what will happen next.
