Stefanos Tsitsipas Storms Through To Aussie Open Semis

Australian Open

January 24, 2023

Stefanos Tsitsipas might just be the only man who can stop Novak Djokovic from winning another Australian Open.

The statuesque Greek produced a massive performance to see off the formidable challenge of Jiri Lehecka.

Tsitsipas saved five break points in the second set and then played the tie-break of his life to take command. He eventually closed out 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4.

Now he plays Karen Khachanov for a place in the Australian Open final, after American Sebi Korda sadly had to retire due to a wrist injury.

Will Novak Djokovic be waiting for the winner in the showpiece? Few would bet against it.

Stefanos Tsitsipas against Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon 2023 would also be awesome!

To see the power and poise of Tsitsipas in person is an extraordinary experience. Now he is showing signs of being able to handle the psychological side of the game in Grand Slam pressure moments too.

And any player faces intriguing mind games against Novak Djokovic over five sets!

Whether they meet in Melbourne or at Wimbledon, Stef’s growing mental strength must give him hope of an upset.

He is playing the biggest points better than ever right now – as we all saw in his spectacular quarter-final.

Tsitsipas observed: ‘I think the tie-break was crucial because it was Jiri’s chance to come back. And I saw it as my chance to really take a strong lead. I was really pleased with how I won the breaker.

‘It wasn’t easy, this match. He had the opportunity to create something for himself – but I was able to step up. I wasn’t always able to do that earlier in my career.’

There’s no doubt Stefanos feels comfortable in Australia. He feels a special emotional attachment to the place.

He explained: ‘The Australian Open is always going to be my “home” Grand Slam. I’d love to win the Aussie Open one day and use the prize money to build a school in Victoria – because this is the state of education.

‘I’d love to give an opportunity in this state to under-privileged kids.’

For now he must focus on winning two more matches. Then his altruistic dream could come true.

Wimbledon 2023 is also on the horizon for Stefanos Tsitsipas.

The months are quickly counting down to the biggest tennis tournament of them all.
