Iga Swiatek And Coco Gauff Are Beaten At Aussie Open

Australian Open

January 22, 2023

Iga Swiatek has been surprisingly defeated at the Australian Open – and Coco Gauff’s dreams are also over for another year Down Under.

But there’s always a positive way to look at their slow start to the big-time tennis season.

The pressure subsides a little. The brightest stars can identify there weaknesses and prepare to peak during the European summer instead.

Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff will return even stronger for Wimbledon 2023!

World number one Swiatek was the overwhelming favourite to take the Aussie title. But top seeds don’t always keep to the script at the biggest tournaments.

Swiatek fell to a formidable fourth-round opponent in Elena Rybakina, though the underdog was only seeded number 22.

The Pole managed to break in the second set but her serve continued to misfire and she couldn’t mount a sustained fightback.

Rybakina stormed through 6-4, 6-4 and will now play Jelena Ostapenko in the quarter-finals.

That’s because the Latvian pulled off another shock by beating Coco Gauff 7-5, 6-3.

We had anticipated a blockbuster showdown between Swiatek and Gauff but it wasn’t to be.

Iga Swiatek versus Coco Gauff will be the match we anticipate even more at Wimbledon 2023 now!

And we fully expect Swiatek to work out what has gone wrong and return to her very best in time for the English summer.

She admitted: ‘I felt the pressure. I didn’t want to lose more than I wanted to win. I need to take a look at my mindset more than anything. I need to fight as hard as I did last year.’

It’s so tough to be world number one because everyone plays without pressure and raises their game to try to take you down.

Gauff doubtless feels similar pressure because she has felt the weight of expectation on her shoulders since she burst upon the scene as a fifteen-year-old at Wimbledon.

How fitting it would be for Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek to come storming back to full potential at Wimbledon 2023!

We can’t wait to welcome these wonderful players because they both help to make the women’s game so great.

Emma Raducanu will also be at Wimbledon 2023. The Brit will be hoping for a historic second major at her home Grand Slam.
