Taylor Fritz has beaten former world number one Daniil Medvedev to win the Diriyah Tennis Cup.

It’s another indicator of the extraordinary progress the American has made in recent times.

Fritz already knows what it means to go deep at Wimbledon.

But this latest victory will really make tennis fans around the world sit up and take notice.

Taylor Fritz is now a serious contender for Wimbledon 2023.

It’s just the Christmas news American fans in particular will crave.

And that makes a ticket for Wimbledon 2023 an even more attractive Christmas present than usual!

Fritz has the movie-star looks and showbiz charisma that are starting to help him transcend the sport.

And it’s been a while since American fans had a man to shout about in such emphatic terms.

Victory for Taylor in Saudi Arabia came in typically dramatic style.

The final boiled down to who could handle the high-pressure tie-breaks better.

And this was where the American performed better than the Russian.

He took the match 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-3) to clinch a title worth a million dollars.

The twenty-five-year-old took an hour and 52 minutes to seal glory behind that trademark swashbuckling serve.

And it wasn’t just the breakers that saw Fritz handle the biggest points best.

Medvedev had six break points in the first set alone as he turned on the power with his unpredictable brand of tennis.

But Daniil couldn’t convert a single one of them as Taylor repeatedly closed the door on his adversary’s hopes.

Fritz said afterwards: ‘First of all, congrats to Daniil for a great tournament. Last time we played he won and told me I was the better player in the first set.

‘This time it’s kind of reverse around. He was the better player for the match. And I was very lucky just to scrape out some of those big points and get through it.’

That was typical modesty from the charming Taylor Fritz. But the scoreboard doesn’t lie and he came out on top for a very good reason.

Taylor Fritz will head into 2023 knowing that a first Grand Slam title is within his reach. Why not Wimbledon 2023?

Tennis expert Mats Wilander commented: ‘I have never experienced a year when there are more players that I think can win a Grand Slam than 2023.’

That’s going to make Wimbledon 2023 super-exciting. Will you be there on Centre Court to enjoy the action?
