Matteo Berrettini continued his grass court winning streak and starts Wimbledon 2022 as one of the hot favourites.
The Italian has the power and personality to go far and attract a big following at the All England Club this year.
After beating Filip Krajinovic 7-5, 6-4 to take the Queen’s Club title, Berrettini went on the charm offensive.
The Wimbledon 2021 finalist had heard that British tennis legend and national treasure Sue Barker was retiring from her television presenting role.
Berrettini wished her well ‘for the rest of your beautiful life’ and she admitted his sentiments made her ‘well up’ with tears.
Matteo Berrettini will even have a British following at Wimbledon 2022 now!
And Berretini has a great chance of winning Wimbledon this year.
After beating Andy Murray to win Stuttgart recently, his latest title on grass will give Matteo even more confidence.
Last year maybe Berrettini didn’t quite believe in himself enough when he lost the Wimbledon final to Novak Djokovic.
But you sense he would be far more ready for a final at Wimbledon 2022.
And what a final Berrettini against Djokovic – or indeed Rafael Nadal – would make!
Matteo is already dreaming of the big occasion.
He explained: ‘I don’t know if it’s too much hype but I would be lying if I told you that the main goal is not to win Wimbledon.
‘I may be one of the ones you can bet on but there are other players. Rafael Nadal was not there last year and it will not be easy.’
