Tsitsipas, Medvedev And Americans Reach Aussie Open Semis! And Americans Reach Aussie Open Semis!

Australian Open

January 26, 2022

Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev produced staggering and very different displays at the Australian Open.

But both were so exceptional that they will now face each other in the semi-finals.

Meanwhile Danielle Collins and Madison Keys are both through to the same stage. And the possibility of an all-American women’s final still exists.

The momentum gained by Tsitsipas in Melbourne makes us long for the Greek to go deep at Wimbledon 2022.

He was simply irresistible as he brushed aside Jannik Sinner 6-3, , 6-4, 6-2.

At no stage did Stefanos seem to have a single doubt in his mind. And physically he looked so strong.

So Daniil Medvedev will probably have to find his form earlier than he did against Felix Auger-Aliassime.

The Canadian looked to have got the better of a sparkling contest and even had a match point.

But Medvedev is notoriously stubborn and once he found a foothold he wouldn’t be denied.

The Russian eventually came through 6-7 (4-7), 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 7-5, 6-4. At least Thursday is a rest day and he will need every hour to recharge those batteries.

Meanwhile the form of the American women at the Australian Open has been a source of inspiration for the post-Serena era.

We’d love to see American fans with fresh reason to cheer at Wimbledon 2022.

And with Collins and Keys on fire Down Under, there is every chance of that.

Danielle overcame quite serious illness in April but you wouldn’t have known it from the way she overpowered Alize Cornet 7-5, 6-1.

Collins seems to have plenty left in the tank and she will need to stay aggressive if she is to prevail against the dangerous Pole, Iga Swiatek.

Young Swiatek is already a Grand Slam winner and showed plenty of fight to turn it around against Kaia Kanepi.

Emotional Iga won through 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 to set up a classic semi-final.

But if Collins beats Swiatek, she could even play her compatriot Madison Keys.

Of course Keys faces the toughest task of all because she must aim to defeat the world number one and Wimbledon champion Ash Barty at her home Slam.

But at least Madison will go into her semi-final pressure free and both women can still dream of an all-American showpiece at the weekend.

Back in London we are already looking forward to the biggest showpieces of them all – the men’s and women’s singles finals at Wimbledon 2022.
